Chapter 1 - The Boy Who Lived
In which we meet the Dursleys and learn of the peculiar happenings surrounding the arrival of Harry Potter on their doorstep including a conversation between Professors Dumbledore and McGonagall.

Chapter 2 - The Vanishing Glass
In which is related the sad circumstances under which Harry has lived for the past ten years and of a trip to the zoo that goes awry.

Chapter 3 - The Letters From No One
In which Dudley gets his new uniform and a letter arrives for Harry, which Uncle Vernon destroys - prompting a veritable deluge of letters over the next few days. Uncle Vernon then attempts to outrun the delivery of the letters and eventually takes his family to an abandoned hut on an island in the ocean.

Chapter 4 - The Keeper of the Keys
In which Hagrid arrives at the hut and informs Harry that he is a wizard and has been accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry also learns the truth about the deaths of his parents and the origin of the scar on his forehead, much to the chagrin of his uncle.

Chapter 5 - Diagon Alley
In which Hagrid takes Harry to Diagon Alley in London to retrieve his inheritance and buy his school supplies, including a wand and Hedwig, a snowy owl. At the same time Hagrid gets a secret package from Gringotts vault 713, Harry meets Draco Malfoy, and Hagrid gives Harry his tickets for the Hogwarts Express.

Chapter 6 - The Journey From Platform Nine and Three Quarters
In which Uncle Vernon takes Harry to King's Cross Station and leaves him there. Harry meets the Weasleys, who help him get to Platform Nine and Three Quarters and settled on the train. Here he gets to know Ron and meets Hermione as the train rumbles to Hogwarts. Upon reaching the school they are met by Hagrid and the First Years are taken by boat to the castle.

Chapter 7 - The Sorting Hat
In which Professor McGonagall tells the first-years a bit about the school and they are sorted into houses by the Sorting Hat. Then Dumbledore welcomes then, they have a feast and find their dormitory for their first night at Hogwarts.

Chapter 8 - The Potions Master
In which Harry is pointed out and stared at by everyone in the school as he starts his first day of classes and meets his teachers, visits Hagrid and learns about the Gringotts break-in.

Chapter 9 - The Midnight Duel
In which Gryffindor and Slytherin have flying lessons together, Neville injures himself on his broom, and Harry and Draco fight it out on brooms over Neville's Remembrall, resulting in Harry being made Seeker of the Gryffindor Quidditch team. Later, Draco challenges Harry to a wizard's duel but instead of dueling he tells Filch in hopes of Harry being caught and expelled. Harry and his friends evade Filch and after encountering Fluffy, the three-headed dog, are safely back in their dormitory.

Chapter 10 - Hallowe'en
In which Harry receives a Nimbus 2000 broom, learns the rules of Quidditch and begins to practice. On Hallowe'en Hermione masters levitation in Charms class but the remarks of a jealous Ron send her in tears to the girls' bathroom, where she is trapped with a troll. Harry and Ron run to her rescue and defeat the troll. Hermione tells a lie to keep them out of trouble and the three become friends.

Chapter 11 - Quidditch
In which Snape takes Harry's book, leading to Harry seeing Snape's injured leg. Harry's first Quidditch match against Slytherin in which someone jinxes his broom but he catches the Snitch and wins anyway. Hagrid later lets a secret slip.

Chapter 12 - The Mirror of Erised
In which Harry, Ron and Hermione (HRH) start searching the library for facts on Flamel, the school empties for Christmas, Ron teaches Harry wizard chess, Harry gets his father's invisibility cloak for Christmas, tries it out at night and finds the Mirror of Erised, sees his family and is cautioned by Dumbledore.

Chapter 13 - Nicolas Flamel
In which Harry learns that Snape will referee the next Quidditch match, Flamel is found, Gryffindor wins over Hufflepuff when Harry grabs the snitch after only five minutes.Harry follows Snape into the Forbidden Forest where he meets Quirrell and they speak of the Philosopher's Stone.

Chapter 14 - Norbert the Norwegian Ridgeback
In which Hermione starts revising, the teachers pile on extra homework, HRH visit Hagrid, discover he has a dragon's egg, and later watch it hatch. As the dragon grows, it becomes harder to hide the illegal pet, until Charlie Weasley agrees to have it sent to him in Romania. Norbert is shipped off from the tallest tower, but Harry and Hermione are caught by Filch on their way back to their dorm.

Chapter 15 - The Forbidden Forest
In which Harry's popularity slips when his escapades lose his house 150 points, he overhears another conversation, and they serve detention with Hagrid who takes them to the Forbidden Forest in search of a wounded unicorn, which they find dead. Harry is rescued from Voldemort by a centaur.

Chapter 16 - Through the Trapdoor
In which the students begin their exams, Hagrid lets slip how to control Fluffy, HRH try to warn Dumbledore but he has been summoned away. Fearful that Snape is about to make his move to get the Philosopher's Stone, HRH decide to go after it themselves. Under the invisibility cloak they make their way to Fluffy, put him to sleep and go down the trapdoor, past plants, chessmen, and potions.

Chapter 17 - The Man With Two Faces
In which Harry discovers it is Quirrell who is after the Stone and serving Voldemort, not Snape. Quirrell tries to use the Mirror of Erised to find the Stone but it gives it to Harry. Voldemort knows this and as part of Quirrell orders the professor to kill Harry, who blacks out in the struggle. He awakes in a hospital bed and hears many things from Dumbledore. At the end of year banquet Gryffindor is awarded the House Cup.

Chapter 1 - The Worst Birthday
In which we are reminded of the happenings during Harry's first year at Hogwarts, uncle Vernon has a very important dinner guest coming, dinner plans are made, and Harry's birthday is forgotten again.

Chapter 2 - Dobby's Warning
In which Dobby, a house elf, arrives in Harry's room to warn him not to return to Hogwarts, the Dursleys' dinner party is ruined by Dobby's antics, and Harry is locked securely in his room.

Chapter 3 - The Burrow
In which Ron, Fred, and George Weasley break Harry out of his room with the car and whisk him away to the Burrow. Harry helps de-gnome the garden after Mrs. Weasley speaks her mind.

Chapter 4 - At Flourish and Blotts
In which Harry and the Weasleys receive their required book lists from Hogwarts and go to Diagon Alley via Floo Powder. There Harry arrives in Knockturn Alley, overhears the Malfoys, is found by Hagrid, meets author/teacher Gilderoy Lockhart, and Arthur Weasley and Lucius Malfoy come to blows.

Chapter 5 - The Whomping Willow
In which the entire Weasley family and Harry cram into the Ford Anglia and drive to King's Cross Station. Harry and Ron cannot get through to the train and decide to fly the car to Hogwarts. The trip is uneventful until the end, when they lose power and crash into the Whomping Willow.

Chapter 6 - Gilderoy Lockhart
In which Ron receives a howler, they learn about mandrakes in Herbology, Colin Creevey asks for an autographed photo, Lockhart is the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, and they learn about Cornish Pixies.

Chapter 7 - Mudbloods and Murmurs
In which Harry begins Quidditch practice, words are exchanged with the Slytherin team, Ron's spell backfires, Harry and Ron serve detention, and Harry hears a voice.

Chapter 8 - The Deathday Party
In which Harry is caught dripping mud on the carpet by Filch, is taken to Filch's office, discovers Filch is not a wizard, and Nearly Headless Nick invites him to his Deathday Party which HRH attend on Hallowe'en night. Leaving the party, Harry hears voices again, and following the sound with Ron and Hermione discovers writing on the wall and a petrified Mrs Norris.

Chapter 9 - The Writing on the Wall
In which HRH are questioned about the petrified cat, Hermione asks about the Chamber of Secrets, they return to the scene of the crime, consult Moaning Myrtle, and puzzle about the mystery.

Chapter 10 - The Rogue Bludger
In which a note from Lockhart gets HRH into the Restricted Section of the library and a book on making Polyjuice Potion. At the Quidditch match a rogue bludger chases Harry, breaking his arm but not stopping him from getting the snitch. Lockhart's attempt to heal Harry removes the bones from his arm. Madam Pomfrey begins to heal him, Dobby pays a visit, and Colin Cheevey is petrified.

Chapter 11 - The Duelling Club
In which Harry is cured, goes looking for Ron and Hermione in the girl's toilet where they are brewing the Polyjuice Potion, Hermione steals the ingredients from Snape's office when Harry creates a diversion in class. A duelling club is started by Lockhart and Snape during which Harry learns he is a Parselmouth when a snake is conjured up by Malfoy. Rumours fly suggesting that Harry is responsible for the attacks on students, a rumour which is strengthened when he stumbles on the bodies of Justin Finch-Fletchley and Nearly-Headless Nick.

Chapter 12 - The Polyjuice Potion
In which Harry is hauled before Dumbledore, witnesses the phoenix burning, and learns Dumbledore does not suspect him of wrongdoing. Christmas day, presents are opened, the Polyjuice Potion is ready, Crabbe and Goyle are drugged and hair stolen and the potion drunk by HRH. Disguised as Crabbe and Goyle, Ron and Harry quiz Draco Malfoy and find he has nothing to do with the Secret Chamber. Upon returning to the girls' toilet they find Hermione has taken on cat features.

Chapter 13 - The Very Secret Diary
In which Myrtle's toilet floods, Harry finds Tom Riddle's diary diary which he shows to a now fur-free Hermione, and they begin a search to discover who the owner was. Lockhart stages a Valentine's party complete with dwarfs as cupids. That night Harry learns the secret of the diary, goes back in time, and discovers that it was Hagrid who last opened the Chamber of Secrets.

Chapter 14 - Cornelius Fudge
In which HRH decide not to confront Hagrid, as time passes and there are no more attacks. Second year students choose their courses for the next year, Quidditch practice becomes more frequent, Harry returns to his dormitory to find his belongings ransacked and the diary gone. Harry hears the voice again, Hermione runs to the library, and Gryffindor's match with Hufflepuff is cancelled when Hermione and another girl are attacked. Harry and Ron visit Hagrid and overhear a conversation between Dumbledore, Fudge, and Lucius Malfoy. Hagrid is taken away and Dumbledore suspended as the Ministry tries to stop the attacks.

Chapter 15 - Aragog
In which tension mounts in Hogwarts as everyone fears another attack - except Draco Malfoy, who is enjoying the situation. Acting on Hagrid's hint about following spiders, Harry and Ron go into the Forbidden Forest, find the Ford Anglia, are captured by huge spiders, learn more about the Chamber of Secrets, and are rescued by the car.

Chapter 16 - The Chamber of Secrets
In which the students learn that exams will be held as usual, Ginny acts strangely, Harry and Ron visit Hermione in hospital, find she has the answer to the Chamber's secret (a basilisk), eavesdrop on the teachers, and learn Ginny has been taken by the monster. Lockhart attempts to flee, but Harry and Ron force him to accompany them to the Chamber via Moaning Myrtle's toilet to rescue Ginny. They unlock the secret of the entrance. Lockhart attempts to escape by using Ron's broken wand, but it backfires and blocks the tunnel. Harry goes on alone.

Chapter 17 - The Heir of Slytherin
In which Harry finds an unconscious Ginny, meets Tom Riddle (who has had Ginny in his power through the diary), and hears his story. Fawkes the phoenix arrives with the Sorting Hat. Riddle (Voldemort) calls the basilisk to kill Harry, but the phoenix attacks and together they kill it, and by driving a serpent fang through the diary, get rid of Riddle as well.

Chapter 18 - Dobby's Reward
In which Harry tells his story to McGonagall and Dumbledore, Ginny and Lockhart are sent to hospital, Lucius Malfoy and Dobby arrive, and Harry tricks Lucius Malfoy into freeing Dobby.

Chapter 1 - Owl Post
In which we are reminded of Harry's previous adventures and told of his summer holidays, he receives birthday cards and presents from his friends, and Harry learns what Ron and Hermione did during the summer.

Chapter 2 - Aunt Marge's Big Mistake
In which Aunt Marge comes to visit and her taunting drives Harry to inflate her, then gather his belongings and leave Privet Drive without permission to visit Hogsmeade.

Chapter 3 - The Knight Bus
In which Harry tries to decide what to do when the Knight Bus arrives to take him to London. En route Harry learns about Sirius Black, is met by Cornelius Fudge at Diagon Alley and installed in a room in the Leaky Cauldron.

Chapter 4 - The Leaky Cauldron
In which Harry enjoys his new-found freedom, purchases his school supplies, and meets with Hermione and Ron. Hermione buys Crookshanks after the cat takes after Ron's Scabbers. Back at the Leaky Cauldron, Harry overhears Mr and Mrs Weasley talking about the danger he is in.

Chapter 5 - The Dementor
In which the students leave the Leaky Cauldron for Hogwarts, board the train, discuss Hogsmeade and a sleeping Professor Remus Lupin prevents a fight with Malfoy. The train is boarded by dementors, Harry passes out, McGonagall wants a word with Harry and Hermione and Hagrid is the new Care of Magical Creatures teacher.

Chapter 6 - Talons and Tea Leaves
In which students begin the new year of classes, Hermione is taking a very full course load and in Divination class Professor Trelawney predicts Harry's death. Hagrid introduces hippogriffs at his first class and Buckbeak is insulted and scratches Malfoy, HRH go to console Hagrid.

Chapter 7 - The Boggart in the Wardrobe
In which Malfoy takes advantage of his injury in Potions, Snape orders Ron and Harry to do his work, Black has been sighted near the school, Lupin conducts his first DADA class on confronting Boggarts.

Chapter 8 - Flight of the Fat Lady
In which DADA class remain a favourite, Quidditch practice begins, Crookshanks goes after Scabbers, tension builds between Ron and Hermione, Harry is denied permission to visit Hogsmeade, Lupin talks to him about fear, Snape brews a potion for Lupin, Hallowe'en feast, and Black slashes the Fat Lady's portrait.

Chapter 9 - Grim Defeat
In which the students are gathered in the Great Hall for the night, Quidditch practice continues, DADA is taken over by Snape when Lupin falls ill, Peeves wakes Harry, Quidditch match between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff in a thunderstorm, Harry sees the Grim and Dementors on the pitch and passes out to awaken in hospital having lost the game.

Chapter 10 - The Marauder's Map
In which Harry spends the weekend in hospital, Lupin returns to class and tells Harry about Dementors, and Fred and George give Harry the Marauder's Map. Harry uses a secret passage to join Ron and Hermione in Hogsmeade, they overhear a teachers' conversation, and learn that Black is believed to have betrayed Harry's parents and is his godfather.

Chapter 11 - The Firebolt
In which Harry mulls over what he heard about Black, almost everyone has gone on holiday, HRH go to visit Hagrid, find him distraught about Buckbeak's hearing before the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures and HRH begin seeking precedents to help Buckbeak's case. Christmas comes and Harry gets a Firebolt broom from an unknown (Black) benefactor, Crookshanks goes after Scabbers again and revives bad feelings between Ron and Hermione, dinner is taken with the teachers, McGonagall takes the Firebolt to check for jinxes.

Chapter 12 - The Patronus
In which both Harry and Ron are angry with Hermione for reporting the Firebolt to McGonagall, Oliver Wood tries to get it back, classes resume, Lupin teaches Harry Patronus to use against the Dementors, Harry asks repeatedly about his Firebolt and finally gets it back, makes up with Hermione just as Ron finds bloody traces of what he thinks is Scabbers.

Chapter 13 - Gryffindor versus Ravenclaw
In which Ron and Hermione's anger grows, Quidditch practice resumes, Gryffindor plays Ravenclaw and wins despite Slytherin's attempts to sabotage the match by dressing as Dementors. Gryffindor celebrates into the night while Hermione studies. Black gets into the dorm and apparently slashes Ron's bed curtains.

Chapter 14 - Snape's Grudge
In which security is tightened, Hagrid is summoned to London with Buckbeak, Ron and Harry plan another visit to Hogsmeade despite Hermione's appeals, Harry wears his invisibility cloak and while playing a trick on Malfoy and his goons was unmasked, rushing back to school only to be confronted by Snape, questioned and only saved by the arrival of Lupin.

Chapter 15 - The Quidditch Final
In which Hagrid loses his case and Buckbeak is sentenced to death, Ron and Hermione make up, Hermione slaps Malfoy, misses Charms class and storms out of Divination. Tensions rise as the Gryffindor-Slytherin match approaches. When it comes, it is the roughest match Harry has ever played, but Gryffindor still wins.

Chapter 16 - Professor Trelawney's Prediction
In which OWLs and NEWTs are coming up and everyone is studying, exam week arrives, Buckbeak's appeal is scheduled, Professor Trelawney unknowingly predicts the return of the Dark Lord, HRH use the cloak of invisibility to visit Hagrid, try to comfort him, Hermione finds Scabbers in a milk jug, men come to execute Buckbeak, HRH go out the back door under the cloak and Scabbers goes berserk.

Chapter 17 - Cat, Rat, and Dog
In which HRH start back to the castle, Crookshanks chases Scabbers, and a big black dog drags Ron into a tunnel under the Whomping Willow. Crookshanks stops the tree from attacking Harry and Hermione, and they follow the cat down the tunnel to emerge in the Shrieking Shack outside Hogsmeade. They find Ron a captive of Black, who disarms them. Harry attacks Black, and with Ron and Hermione overpowers him, but Crookshanks stands between Harry and Black when Harry threatens to kill him. Lupin arrives and admits that he's Black's friend and a werewolf. It is revealed that Scabbers is an Animagus named Peter Pettigrew.

Chapter 18 - Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs
In which Lupin tells his story of becoming a werewolf and school days with James Potter, Black and Snape, the last of whom now appears.

Chapter 19 - The Servant of Lord Voldemort
In which Snape threatens Lupin and Black with the Dementors, HRH disarm Snape with a spell, Lupin and Black tell the truth about Harry's parents' deaths, Scabbers reverts back to Peter Pettigrew, the truth comes out about all the players in the drama, revealing that Pettigrew was responsible for the Potters' deaths, and Harry keeps Lupin and Black from killing Pettigrew.

Chapter 20 - The Dementors' Kiss
In which they go back through the tunnel towards the castle, Black invites Harry to live with him, Lupin becomes a werewolf when the moon comes out and Black transforms to a dog prevent him from attacking HRH, Pettigrew becomes a rat and escapes, Black goes after him and is confronted by Dementors, Harry and Hermione run for help but are caught by Dementors as well.

Chapter 21 - Hermione's Secret
In which Harry awakens in hospital, desperately tries to tell Black's side of the story but is not believed until Dumbledore arrives, who tells Hermione to use her Time-Turner (which she had been using to increase the amount of classes she could attend) to go back and change events to save Buckbeak and Black. First they rescue Buckbeak, then Harry rescues himself from the Dementors with a Patronus Charm, then they ride Buckbeak to rescue Black, who escapes on the hippogriff.

Chapter 22 - Owl Post Again
In which Harry and Hermione safely return to the hospital wing, where Snape arrives to blame them for Black's escape but cannot prove it. Lupin resigns, returning the invisibility cloak and Marauder's Map to Harry. Term ends, HRH return home on the Hogwarts Express, Harry gets owl post from Black, and Ron gets a new owl.

Chapter Synopses:
Chapter 1 - The Riddle House
In which we learn of the mysterious murders in the Riddle House fifty years ago, how Frank Bryce was accused but released for lack of evidence, and how the Riddle House fell into disrepair. In the present, Frank interrupts a sinister meeting and is killed when he overhears Voldemort's plans.

Chapter 2 - The Scar
In which Harry awakens from a bad dream, his scar burning, we recap Harry's previous adventures, and he writes a letter to his godfather.

Chapter 3 - The Invitation
In which Dudley and the rest of the Dursleys are on a diet, and the Dursleys get letter from Mrs. Weasley inviting Harry to stay with her family and attend the World Quidditch Cup finals.

Chapter 4 - Back to the Burrow
In which Harry awaits the arrival of the Weasleys, who come by Floo Powder and get trapped in the blocked-off fireplace, blast it open, send Fred and George after Harry's trunk, then Floo back to the Burrow. Just as Harry is about to leave, Dudley eats a magical toffee dropped by Fred and grows a huge purple tongue. Harry Floos away to leave Mr Weasley to sort it out as Uncle Vernon starts throwing ornaments.

Chapter 5 - Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes
In which the Weasleys return home, Fred and George are reprimanded by Mr and Mrs Weasley for giving Dudley the toffee, we learn more about the Weasley clan, and they have dinner in the garden.

Chapter 6 - The Portkey
In which Apparation is discussed, Fred and George are caught with toffees, and everyone sets off via Portkey for the World Cup site.

Chapter 7 - Bagman and Crouch
In which they arrive at the campsite, erect their tent, tour the camp, meet Ludo Bagman (with whom Fred and George bet on the match), and excitement rises as game time draws near.

Chapter 8 - The Quidditch World Cup
In which the spectators take their seats, Harry meets Winky (house elf for Barty Crouch), the Malfoys, and Mr. Oblansk (the Bulgarian Minister for Magic). The pre-game show features the Bulgarian and Irish team mascots, followed by the introductions of the teams, and the game begins. Ireland takes an early lead and eventually wins despite repeated Bulgarian fouls and Krum catching the snitch. Fred and George win their bet with Bagman.

Chapter 9 - The Dark Mark
In which Harry dreams about Quidditch, some wizards run amok, Ministry wizards attempt to stop them, and HRH hide in the forest, encountering Draco Malfoy along the way. Harry discovers that he has lost his wand. HRH meet Bagman, hear noises in the forest, and see the Dark Mark. Ministry wizards arrive and shoot Stunning Spells in every direction, hitting Winky, whom they blame for conjuring the Dark Mark (though they soon realize that this is unlikely).

Chapter 10 - Mayhem at the Ministry
In which they Portkey back to the Burrow, Harry tells Ron and Hermione about his dream, Mr Weasley returns home to report problems with Rita Skeeter's articles in The Daily Prophet, and HRH prepare to return to Hogwarts.

Chapter 11 - Aboard the Hogwarts Express
In which Mad-Eye Moody jinxes dustbins, Mr Weasley hustles off to sort out the mess, Mrs Weasley takes the children to the train station via Muggle taxis, and HRH meet old friends and enemies on the train.

Chapter 12 - The Triwizard Tournament
In which the students arrive at Hogwarts in a gale, are soaked by Peeves' water balloons, the First Years are sorted, and Hermione discovers that there are house elves at Hogwarts. Moody is the new DADA teacher, Dumbledore announces the Triwizard Tournament, and Fred and George decide to enter despite being underage.

Chapter 13 - Mad-Eye Moody
In which the fourth-year students gather Bubotuber pus in Herbology, study Blast-ended Skrewts with Hagrid, study Astrology in Divination, and Malfoy delights in pointing out that Mr Weasley is in the paper again. In the argument that follows, Malfoy attacks Harry, but Moody turns Malfoy into a ferret, bouncing him around the hall until McGonagall stops him.

Chapter 14 - The Unforgivable Curses
In which the fourth-year students learn about the Unforgivable Curses in their first lesson with Moody, Moody takes Neville to his office, Harry and Ron fake their Divination homework, Hermione starts SPEW, and Harry receives a letter from Sirius saying he's returning to Britain.

Chapter 15 - Beauxbatons and Durmstrang
In which Harry sends an owl to Sirius telling him everything is fine. In DADA, Moody puts the Imperius curse on everyone and only Harry can resist it, school work piles up, Hogwarts spruces up for the visitors, Hermione continues her elf rights campaign, a message via Hedwig announces that Sirius is back in the country, and the Beauxbatons and Durmstrang students arrive by flying carriage and submerged ship respectively.

Chapter 16 - The Goblet of Fire
In which all learn about the Triwizard Tournament after dinner in the Great Hall. Next morning Fred and George fail to fool the Goblet of Fire. HRH visit Hagrid, discovering that he fancies Madame Maxime of Beauxbatons. After the Hallowe'en feast, the Goblet chooses the champions - Viktor Krum for Durmstrang; Fleur Delacour for Beauxbatons; Cedric Diggory for Hogwarts..and a fourth champion - Harry Potter.

Chapter 17 - The Four Champions
In which the Triwizard judges try to decide how Harry was selected, argue and finally accept the fact. Few believe that Harry did not enter his own name; Ron is not one of the few.

Chapter 18 - The Weighing of the Wands
In which Hermione tries to help Harry, persuading him to write to Sirius. The other houses are no longer friendly to Harry, but he finds an ally in Hagrid. As the situation in school grows worse, Malfoy taunts Harry into throwing a curse; Malfoy responds, the curses clash, and hit Goyle and Hermione. Harry is called out of Potions for the Weighing of the Wands and meets Rita Skeeter, who is covering the ceremony. Later in the day, an owl arrives from Sirius asking Harry to meet him.

Chapter 19 - The Hungarian Horntail
In which an article by Rita Skeeter fuels the taunts of the students against Harry and Hermione. Hermione tries and fails to reunite Harry and Ron. Harry hides under his Invisibility Cloak to accompany Hermione to Hogsmeade, but Moody sees him anyway. Hagrid asks to meet Harry at midnight, when he reveals the dragons of the First Task. Back in the common rom, Sirius issues some warnings through the fire.

Chapter 20 - The First Task
In which Harry and Hermione try unsuccessfully to find a spell to use against dragons. Harry warns Diggory about the dragons, Moody gives Harry a hint, and Hermione helps Harry learn to cast a Summoning Charm. The First Task is to get past a dragon and collect the golden egg; each champion succeeds in turn, Harry being the quickest. Ron and Harry finally make up, and Bagman tells the champions that the clue to the next task is in the golden egg.

Chapter 21 - The House-Elf Liberation Front
In which a surprise party is held for Harry, he opens the egg, and Hermione discovers how to get into the kitchen. In Care of Magical Creatures, the Blast-ended Skrewts rebel against hibernation, Rita arranges an interview with Hagrid, and HRH go to the kitchens where they find Dobby and Winky.

Chapter 22 - The Unexpected Task
In which the Yule Ball is announced, and Harry learns that he is expected to have a dance partner. Harry tries to get up the nerve to ask Cho to the dance, but when he finally does finds that she already has a date with Cedric, so Harry arranges to go with Parvati Patil instead.

Chapter 23 - The Yule Ball
In which an owl arrives from Sirius, Dobby startles Harry on Christmas morning, presents are opened, the boys have a snow ball fight, and all prepare for the Yule Ball. Emotions run high as Ron is angry with Hermione for consorting with Krum, and Harry and Ron overhear secrets of Snape and Hagrid.

Chapter 24 - Rita Skeeter's Scoop
In which past arguments are forgotten, and Hagrid is replaced as CMC teacher when Rita Skeeter writes a defamatory article about him. HRH try but fail to visit him. HRH encounter Bagman in Hogsmeade, where Harry rejects his offer of help with the Tournament. Rita arrives and is verbally assaulted by Harry and Hermione, who then go to Hagrid's cabin, finding Dumbledore there, and together they persuade Hagrid to return to work.

Chapter 25 - The Egg and the Eye
In which Harry works on solving the secret of the Egg in the prefects' bathroom, is helped by Moaning Myrtle, sees Crouch on the Marauder's Map, gets stuck in the stairs, barely escapes being caught by Snape, and Moody borrows Harry's map.

Chapter 26 - The Second Task
In which HRH discuss the situation in Charms class, HRH search for spells to help with the Second Task, and Hagrid returns to CMC class. Harry continues his spell all through the night before the Second Task, to be awakened by Dobby who gives him Gillyweed to breathe underwater. Harry performs the Second Task: to recover from the merpeople what was taken from each Champion. Harry rescues Ron and Fleur's sister, tying with Krum on points.

Chapter 27 - Padfoot Returns
In which Ron becomes a celebrity, Skeeter writes an article about Hermione, Snape reads it in class, Harry overhears Snape and Karkaroff, and HRH meet Sirius outside Hogsmeade, learning about Barty Crouch's son dying in Azkaban.

Chapter 28 - The Madness of Mr Crouch
In which HRH visit the kitchens again, Hermione upsets Winky, and Harry sends owls with food to Sirius, Hermione gets threatening letters by owl, Hagrid has Nifflers in CMC, more hate mail arrives, Harry learns that the Third Task involves a maze, Krum asks Harry about his relationship with Hermione, Crouch appears (bloody, bedraggled and incoherent), Harry goes for Dumbledore but Crouch apparently attacks Krum and runs off.

Chapter 29 - The Dream
In which HRH discuss Crouch, Fred and George discuss blackmail, and Moody discusses Crouch. Harry prepares for the Third Task, dreams of Voldemort in Divination, and reports to Dumbledore.

Chapter 30 - The Pensieve
In which Harry, left alone in Dumbledore's office, sees some glimpses of the past in Dumbledore's Pensieve: Karkaroff giving evidence before a court of wizards, Crouch's son being sentenced to Azkaban. Harry tells Dumbledore about his dream, and the headmaster speculates on its meaning.

Chapter 31 - The Third Task
In which Harry tells Ron and Hermione about the visit to Dumbledore's office, Harry practices for the Third Task, Skeeter writes another article about Harry, and Hermione finally figures out how Rita gets her information. Mrs Weasley and Bill arrive to watch Harry in the Tournament, the four champions enter the maze, monsters are met, Fleur screams, and Krum apparently attacks Cedric. Harry meets a sphinx and solves a riddle, only to be attacked by a huge spider. Harry and Cedric agree to grasp the Cup at the same time, tying for the win.

Chapter 32 - Flesh, Blood and Bone
In which Harry and Cedric are transported to a graveyard, encountering Voldemort. Cedric is killed, Harry is tied to Riddle's tombstone, and Wormtail resurrects Voldemort.

Chapter 33 - The Death Eaters
In which Voldemort summons the Death Eaters, chastises them, and reveals his plans, explaining how he came back to life.

Chapter 34 - Priori Incantatem
In which Voldemort tries again to kill Harry but their spells clash, shades of Voldemort's victims emerge from his wand, and Harry escapes through the Portkey.

Chapter 35 - Veritaserum
In which Harry returns to Hogwarts, telling Moody what happened while returning to the castle. Moody divulges that it was he who put Harry's name in the Goblet. Dumbledore, McGonagall and Snape arrive in time to prevent Moody from killing Harry. Dumbledore blasts Moody, sends Snape and McGonagall on errands, and opens the seven-locked trunk to reveal the real Moody in an underground pit. As the Polyjuice Potion wears off, the fake Moody is revealed as Crouch's son, who tells all when questioned under Veritaserum.

Chapter 36 - The Parting of the Ways
In which Harry tells his story to Dumbledore and Sirius, then is turned over to Madam Pomfrey. Meanwhile, Fudge permits a Dementor to Kiss Crouch. Fudge argues with Dumbledore about what has happened, refusing to believe Voldemort is back, refusing to take measures against him. Dumbledore dispatches those loyal to him on various errands.

Chapter 37 - The Beginning
In which the school returns to normal, HRH visit Hagrid, and the Leaving Feast takes place, at which Dumbledore tells the students of Cedric's death and warns them about Voldemort's return. Goodbyes are said, and on the train home, Hermione reveals the captured Skeeter (a beetle) in a jar. Malfoy and his cronies arrive to taunt HRH but are blasted by hexes. Harry gives his winnings to Fred and George to start a joke shop.

Harry has another disturbing dream from Voldemort's point of view, Harry continues his Occlumency lessons with Snape, Trelawney is sacked, and Firenze the centaur is hired to teach Divination.

Chapter 27 - The Centaur and the Sneak
In which Harry and his classmates have their first Divination lesson with Firenze, Marietta Edgecombe tells Umbridge of the D.A.'s meeting but suffers the effects of Hermione's jinx, Dobby warns Harry that the D.A. has been found out, and Harry denies the meetings to Fudge and Umbridge. Kingsley Shacklebolt modifies Marietta's memory, and Dumbledore takes the blame and leaves Hogwarts.

Chapter 28 - Snape's Worst Memory
In which Umbridge replaces Dumbledore as Head of Hogwarts, the students (with the help of Fred's and George's inventions) rebel while the staff sit back and watch, and Umbridge tries to get Harry to tell her where Dumbledore is hiding. Harry confronts Cho about her friend Marietta, continues his Occlumency lessons with Snape, and while poking around in Snape's Pensieve discovers that his father may have been every bit as arrogant as Snape had previously told him.

Chapter 29 - Career Advice
In which Harry tells Ginny of his desire to talk to Sirius, receives career advice from Professor McGonagall, breaks into Umbridge's office to use her floo to talk to Sirius about his father, and Fred and George leave Hogwarts.

Chapter 30 - Grawp
In which Harry recalls the dream again, the Gryffindors play Ravenclaw for the final match of the Quidditch season, and Hagrid introduces Harry and Hermione to his half-brother, Grawp, making them promise to look after Grawp if he has to leave. Gryffindor wins the match and the Quidditch Cup, and Ron is carried triumphantly off the pitch.

Chapter 31 - O.W.L.S
In which Harry and Hermione tell Ron about Grawp, the fifth years take their O.W.L.s, Hagrid is sacked, McGonagall is stunned, and Harry dreams that Sirius is being tortured.

Chapter 32 - Out of the Fire
In which Ron, Hermione, Neville, and Luna help Harry break into Umbridge's office, Kreacher leads Harry to believe that Sirius is at the Department of Mysteries, and Hermione tricks Umbridge into taking her and Harry into the Forbidden Forest.

Chapter 33 - Flight and Fight
In which Hermione and Harry lead Umbridge into the Forbidden Forest, Umbridge insults the centaurs and they take her away, Grawp rescues Harry and Hermione from the centaurs, and Ron rejoins them with Neville, Ginny, and Luna, who insist on helping them in their fight. Luna suggests using the thestrals to get them to London.

Chapter 34 - The Department of Mysteries
In which Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville, Ginny, and Luna fly to London on thestrals, they are allowed access to the Ministry of Magic through the telephone booth, and they enter the Department of Mysteries - specifically the room containing small glass spheres, one of which is marked with Harry's name, and is later discovered to be a prophecy.

Chapter 35 - Beyond the Veil
In which Lucius Malfoy, Bellatrix Lestrange, and other Death Eaters arrive and attempt to take the prophecy away from Harry. The D.A. members fight the Death Eaters and are separated. Hermione is hurt, Neville's nose is broken, and when they are reunited with the others, Ginny's ankle is broken and Ron is badly injured. Later, Luna is hurt. Remus, Sirius, Dumbledore, and other members of the Order of the Phoenix arrive to fight the Death Eaters. Sirius duels with Bellatrix and loses his life through the veil.

Chapter 36 - The Only One He Ever Feared
In which Harry pursues Bellatrix and learns he is incapable of an Unforgivable Curse; Voldemort shows up; Dumbledore saves Harry from the Killing Curse; Fudge and other Ministry members witness Voldemort's return; and Dumbledore reinstates himself as Headmaster.

Chapter 37 - The Lost Prophecy
In which Harry has his final outburst in anguish over Sirius' death, and Dumbledore tells him everything - about why he must return to the Dursleys every year, about the prophecy, about how Voldemort marked him as his equal, about how it could as easily been Neville, and about how either Harry or Voldemort must die. Dumbledore also admits to allowing his emotions to blur his judgment with Harry.

Chapter 38 - The Second War Begins
In which Ron and Hermione are recovering from their injuries, Fudge publicly admits to Voldemort's return, McGonagall returns from St. Mungo's, and Harry asks Nearly Headless Nick about ghosts. Harry rides home with Ron, Hermione, Neville, and Luna on the train; Moody, Lupin, and Tonks meet him at the train station and warn the Dursleys to be good to him during the summer.

Chapter 1 - The Other Minister
In which the Muggle Prime Minister recounts his encounters with Cornelius Fudge, Fudge visits him again with Scrimgeour, and we learn that Scrimgeour is the new Minister of Magic. We also hear of the wizarding world's open war with Voldemort - dozens of Muggles have been killed along with Amelia Bones and Emmeline Vance, the dementors and giants have joined Voldemort, and the Ministry is struggling to fight.

Chapter 2 - Spinner's End
In which Narcissa goes to visit Snape in secret against Voldemort's orders, and Bellatrix tries to stop her but joins her at Snape's house anyway. Snape prevents Wormtail's eavesdropping and tells Bellatrix his story, though she still refuses to trust him; Narcissa then reveals that Voldemort has ordered Draco to do something difficult, and asks Snape to make an Unbreakable Vow - which he then does, saying that he will help Draco carry out the deed, and perform the deed himself if Draco fails.

Chapter 3 - Will and Won't
In which the Daily Prophet tells us about the wizarding public's perception of Harry and the steps the Ministry has taken to provide safety in the war, and Dumbledore returns to Privet Drive. Before leaving, Dumbledore sits with Harry and the Dursleys, updates Harry on his inheritance from Sirius and gives him Kreacher, determining that he has indeed come into Harry's possession. Dumbledore then chastises the Dursleys for their treatment of Harry but asks that he be allowed to return to Privet Drive one final time, and he and Harry depart.

Chapter 4 - Horace Slughorn
In which Harry and Dumbledore apparate to Budleigh Blabberton - discussing Voldemort, Inferi, and Dumbledore's injured hand along the way - and meet Slughorn, shortly after he has faked his own demise. Dumbledore asks Slughorn to teach at Hogwarts, and Harry convinces him to while Dumbledore is out of the room. Dumbledore then takes Harry to the Burrow, where before entering he tells Harry about Slughorn, talks to him about Sirius and the prophecy, and tells Harry he will be taking private lessons from Dumbledore during the school year.

Chapter 5 - An Excess of Phlegm
In which Harry talks with Mrs. Weasley (and later Mr. Weasley) about the Ministry, we see Fleur and learn that she and Bill are engaged to his family's dismay, and Harry tells Ron and Hermione about Slughorn, his private lessons with Dumbledore, and the prophecy, while they tell him about Fleur and Tonks. O.W.L. results then arrive, with Harry earning seven O.W.L.s but realizing that Snape won't allow him to take N.E.W.T. potions, and therefore he won't be able to become an Auror.

Chapter 6 - Draco's Detour
In which we learn of several disappearances including Florean Fortescue and Mr. Ollivander, and Harry, Hermione, and the Weasleys go shopping at Diagon Alley, escorted by Hagrid. There they discover a much-changed atmosphere and an empty Leaky Cauldron, have a run-in with Draco and Narcissa Malfoy in Madam Malkin's, tour Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, and sneak out to follow Draco into Borgin and Burke's, where they overhear a mysterious conversation between him and Mr. Borgin.

Chapter 7 - The Slug Club
In which Harry thinks Malfoy might be a Death Eater, everyone departs for King's Cross, and before getting on the train Harry tells Mr. Weasley his suspicions. On the train, Harry finds he is more famous than ever, but sits with Neville and Luna until Slughorn invites him to tea. After hours of boring conversation, Harry sneaks into the Slytherins' compartment, invisible, and listens to Malfoy brag about working with Voldemort, but when the train stops Malfoy freezes Harry and leaves him behind.

Chapter 8 - Snape Victorious
In which Tonks rescues Harry from the train and Snape leads Harry in to the feast, criticizing Harry all the way. Once inside, Harry discusses his status as 'The Chosen One' with those around him and Dumbledore gives his opening speech, announcing that Slughorn will be teaching Potions and Snape teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts. On the way out of the hall, Harry and Ron discuss Malfoy and run into Hagrid, who tells them about Grawp and leaves them feeling guilty for not taking his class.

Chapter 9 - The Half-Blood Prince
In which Gryffindors get course schedules and discuss Malfoy and Quidditch trials, then go to their first day of classes. In Defense Against the Dark Arts Harry fights back against Snape's attempt to jinx him and gets detention, during break he hears his first lesson with Dumbledore will be Saturday, and in Potions Harry wins the Felix Felicius thanks to a perfect potion he brewed with the instructions written in his book by the Half-Blood Prince.

Chapter 10 - The House of Gaunt
In which Harry attends his first lesson with Dumbledore, who explains that they will be delving into Voldemort's past and takes Harry into the pensieve. In Bob Ogden's memory they go to Marvolo Gaunt's house to see about his son, Morfin, who has committed a crime; there they see a mean, impoverished, racist Marvolo abusing his daughter Merope, who is watching Muggle Tom Riddle. Dumbledore explains that Merope later used a love potion on Tom, and they became Voldemort's parents.

Chapter 11 - Hermione's Helping Hand
In which Harry discovers his newfound popularity, learns that Stan Shunpike has been arrested, and holds a frustratingly massive Quidditch tryout that includes a run-in with Cormac McLaggen and Katie, Ginny, and Ron making the team. They visit Hagrid and learn that Aragog is dying, Harry confronts Hermione about having confunded McLaggen during the tryout, and Slughorn invites Harry and Hermione to supper, but Harry is spared having to go when Snape refuses to let him out of detention.

Chapter Twelve - Silver and Opals
In which Harry tries one of the Half-Blood Prince's spells while reading in bed and levitates Ron by accident, argues with Hermione over the danger of the Prince, and gets word of his next lesson with Dumbledore. The trio then walks to Hogsmeade, where Slughorn corners Harry in Honeydukes and Harry sees Mundungus with things stolen from Grimmauld Place. On the way home, an Imperiused Katie Bell touches a cursed necklace and is hurt; Harry then suspects Draco and tells McGonagall this, though Ron and Hermione don't believe him.

Chapter 13 - The Secret Riddle
In which Harry has his second lesson with Dumbledore, where they briefly discuss Mundungus and Draco, and Dumbledore discusses Merope with Harry again. Together, they then view a memory of Dumbledore's, where he visits Voldemort's childhood orphanage to invite him to school. In it, Dumbledore learns Riddle's history and discovers that he has already been using magic, hates his name, likes to steal and collect trinkets, and neither has nor desires friends.

Chapter 14 - Felix Felicis
In which Hermione and Ron discuss the Slug Club in Herbology and Harry notices an attraction between them, Dean takes Katie's place on the Quidditch team, and Harry and Ron run into Ginny and Dean kissing. Ron gets upset and Ginny tells him off, but Harry starts thinking of kissing Ginny himself. Ron becomes angry and plays terribly next practice, but for the match Harry pretends to slip him Felix Felicis, giving him confidence, and Gryffindor wins. After the game, Ron is spotted kissing Lavender, leaving Hermione upset.

Chapter 15 - The Unbreakable Vow
In which Hermione stays angry with Ron but Harry tries to stay friends with both, Harry finds that girls are trying to seduce him, and Romilda Vane tries to slip him a Love Potion. Harry then asks Luna to Slughorn's Christmas party, and Hermione invites McLaggen to upset Ron. After some general mingling at the party, Malfoy is caught prowling the corridors and Snape takes him away to an empty classroom, where Harry overhears Snape's offers to help Malfoy and Draco's refusals.

Chapter 16 - A Very Frosty Christmas
In which Harry and Ron discuss Malfoy and Snape, Harry tells Mr. Weasley his suspicions and hears about the Ministry's poor fight against Death Eaters, Lupin talks about Snape and Greyback, and Harry discovers that the Half-Blood Prince's book was fifty years old. Percy shows up on Christmas with Scrimgeour, who then asks Harry to support the Ministry, and Harry refuses strongly, saying he disapproves of the actions the Ministry has been taking.

Chapter 17 - A Sluggish Memory
In which, back at Hogwarts, Harry chats with Hermione about Ron and Malfoy, learns that apparition lessons are coming, and finds that both Ron and Ginny seem disenchanted with their relationships. He then has a lesson with Dumbledore, where they discuss Scrimgeour and see two memories: in the first, Morfin tells Voldemort about his family just before Voldemort kills the Riddles; in the second (which Slughorn has modified), Voldemort asks Slughorn about horcruxes. Finally, Dumbledore sets Harry homework - to obtain the rest of Slughorn's memory.

Chapter 18 - Birthday Surprises
In which Harry gives Slughorn a bezoar instead of an antidote in Potions class, then asks him unsuccessfully about Horcruxes. The sixth-years then have their first apparition lesson, where Harry overhears Malfoy saying Crabbe has been acting as his lookout, and Harry starts watching the Marauder's Map. Then, on Ron's birthday, Ron accidentally consumes Romilda Vane's love potion and Harry takes him to Slughorn to get an antidote; there, Slughorn gives Ron some poisoned mead and Harry saves his life with a bezoar.

Chapter 19 - Elf Tails
In which Harry discusses Ron's poisioning with the Weasleys, Hagrid tells Harry that he overheard Dumbledore and Snape arguing, McLaggen accosts Harry to ensure he can play in Ron's place in the upcoming Quidditch match, and Harry finds that Ron has been avoiding Lavender. At the Quidditch match (with Luna commentating!), McLaggen grabs a beater's bat and cracks Harry's skull. Finally, in the hospital wing, Harry summons Kreacher and Dobby and orders them to tail Malfoy and figure out what he's up to.

Chapter 20 - Lord Voldemort's Request
In which Ginny fights with Dean and Ron with Lavender, Luna delivers a message to Harry of a lesson with Dumbledore, and Harry arrives at the lesson to find Trelawney being asked to leave. Dumbledore makes Harry feel guilty for not procuring Slughorn's memory, but they view two new memories: in the first, Riddle visits Hepzibah Smith and sees Slytherin's locket days before her death; in the second, Riddle asks Dumbledore for the D.A.D.A. post at Hogwarts, which Dumbledore admits began the curse on the position.

Chapter 21 - The Unknowable Room
In which Harry talks with Ron and Hermione about Apparition, Slughorn's memory, and Lavender, and Kreacher and Dobby show up to report on Malfoy, making Harry realize Draco's been using the Room of Requirement with Polyjuiced Crabbe and Goyle as lookouts. Harry spends some time trying to get into the Room of Requirement (unsuccessfully), Snape picks on him in class again, Moaning Myrtle reveals she's been talking with a boy, and Harry runs into a disheveled Tonks and wonders if she loved Sirius.

Chapter 22 - After the Burial
In which Aragog dies, Ron and Hermione have their Apparition test, and Harry makes a Euphoria potion in a class with just Slughorn, Ernie and Draco, after which he tries to corner Slughorn but fails. Hermione passes her test and convinces Harry to take Felix Felicis to get Slughorn's memory; Harry does, and goes down to Hagrid's, meeting and inviting Slughorn along the way. There they bury Aragog together, Slughorn and Hagrid become drunk, and Harry convinces Slughorn to give him the memory.

Chapter 23 - Horcruxes
In which Harry learns that Dumbledore has returned, races off to his office, and with him watches Slughorn's memory, where Riddle learns what Horcruxes are and contemplates making more than one. Dumbledore explains his suspicions that Riddle made six, including the now-destroyed ring and diary, the locket, the cup, and Nagini. Dumbledore promises Harry can join him in destroying the next one, and explains to Harry what love - and the prophecy - really mean.

Chapter 24 - Sectumsempra
In which Ron and Ginny are both single again, Katie Bell returns to Hogwarts but can't remember what happened to her, and Harry sees Malfoy with Moaning Myrtle on the Marauder's Map and runs to eavesdrop - but when Malfoy tries to hex Harry, Harry uses the Sectumsempra on him without knowing what it does and slashes him apart. Snape heals Malfoy but gives Harry detention during the Quidditch match, which Gryffindor wins anyway. Then, when Harry arrives at the party, he finally kisses Ginny.

Chapter 25 - The Seer Overheard
In which Hermione finds out about Eileen Prince, Dumbledore asks Harry to come immediately, and on the way Harry runs into Trelawney, learning from her both that Malfoy is incredibly happy and that Snape was the one who overheard the prophecy. Dumbledore asks Harry to accompany him on a quest for the Horcrux, but first Harry confronts him again about Snape; finally, Harry runs off to fetch his invibility cloak, giving Ron and Hermione his map and Felix Felicis, and he and Dumbledore apparate to the seaside.

Chapter 26 - The Cave
In which Harry and Dumbledore enter the cave where Voldemort has hidden a Horcrux. After swimming to the entrance, Dumbledore spatters it with his blood to gain entry and they take a hidden boat across a lake. Protecting the Horcrux there is a potion that Dumbledore drinks, though Harry must force him to; after they obtain the locket Inferi erupt out of the water, and a weakened Dumbledore casts a fire spell to repel them as the pair flees the cave.

Chapter 27 - The Lightning-Struck Tower
In which Harry and Dumbledore return to Hogsmeade and see the Dark Mark over Hogwarts. They fly to the top of the astronomy tower, where Draco appears and disarms Dumbledore, but can't bring himself to kill him and Dumbledore tries to convince Draco to come to the good side. Before Malfoy can decide, though, other Death Eaters show up - including Snape, who kills Dumbledore himself, blasting the body off of the tower.

Chapter 28 - Flight of the Prince
In which Snape, Malfoy, and the Death Eaters flee, and Harry gives chase. On the way, he runs through a raging battle involving the Order and tries unsuccessfully to curse Snape (who we learn definitively is the Half-Blood Prince), Hagrid's hut is set ablaze and the Death Eaters escape. Harry and Hagrid then put out the fire, see students all over the grounds, and find Dumbledore's body. Harry also discovers that the locket was not a real Horcrux, but a replacement put there by the person who took the real one: R.A.B.

Chapter 29 - The Phoenix Lament
In which Ginny leads Harry to the hospital wing, where the Order discusses Bill, Dumbledore, Snape, and the events of the evening. We also learn that Fleur still wants to marry a disfigured Bill, and that Lupin has been refusing dates with Tonks. McGonagall takes Harry to her office (formerly Dumbledore's) and asks where he was but Harry refuses to say; the heads of houses then arrive and discuss closing the school. Finally, as Scrimgeour arrives, Harry leaves to Gryffindor Tower, where he updates Ron on the Horcrux.

Chapter 30 - The White Tomb
In which most students hang around for Dumbledore's funeral, as wizards from across the country flood in to pay their last respects. Hermione discovers that Eileen Prince was Snape's mother, Harry ponders the Horcruxes a bit, and then all attend the funeral, after which Harry breaks up with Ginny. As Harry then walks off on his own, Scrimgeour again tries to persuade him to help the ministry, and Ron and Hermione come over. Harry tells them he won't return to Hogwarts, and they pledge to stay by his side.

Chapter 1 - The Dark Lord Ascending
In which Snape reports to Voldemort the plans of the Order of the Phoenix to move Harry Potter from number four Privet Drive, Voldemort takes Lucius Malfoy's wand, the Death Eaters gathered in Malfoy Manor make fun of Tonks' marriage to a werewolf, and Voldemort kills Charity Burbage, the erstwhile Hogwarts Muggle Studies teacher.

Chapter 2 - In Memoriam
In which Harry is preparing to leave Privet Drive, emptying his school trunk and packing a rucksack with the items most important to him. In the process, he also sorts through the newspapers of the past few weeks to re-read and save Dumbledore's obituary. At the end of his packing, he notices an interview in the current day's paper in which Rita Skeeter is talking about her upcoming tell-all biography, The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore.

Chapter 3 - The Dursleys Departing
In which Vernon Dursley is reluctant for the family to flee Privet Drive on Harry's say-so, Harry explains the situation again, and Dudley talks sense.

Chapter 4 - The Seven Potters
In which Mad-Eye arrives with Ron, Hermione, and various Order members in tow, announcing a change in plans. Six of them are to use Polyjuice Potion to act as decoy Harry Potters while seven act as protectors, which each protector/Potter pair heading to a different safe-house. Upon getting airborne and splitting up, all of them are attacked, and Hedwig is soon killed. Harry gives himself away by using the Disarming Charm, and he and Hagrid barely escape with their lives, crashing into the Tonks' back garden.

Chapter 5 - Fallen Warrior
In which the survivors make their way to the Burrow, learning that Mad-Eye was killed in the fight and George Weasley severely hurt, while Mundungus fled. Harry then has a vision of Voldemort torturing Ollivander, seeking to know why using Lucius Malfoy's wand did not solve the problem of being unable to defeat Harry Potter.

Chapter 6 - The Ghoul in Pajamas
In which Molly Weasley loads HRH up with wedding-preparation chores in an attempt to stop them from making plans to leave, while Ron and Hermione prove to Harry that they understand what's involved in accompanying him and have taken steps to protect their families from retaliation. Hermione reveals that she has researched the problem of destroying Horcruxes using books stolen from Dumbledore's office. Fleur's parents arrive for the wedding, and simple plans are made to celebrate Harry's birthday, which falls the day before the ceremony.

Chapter 7 - The Will of Albus Dumbledore
In which it is Harry's seventeenth birthday, and Rufus Scrimgeour arrives to deliver the bequests of Albus Dumbledore to Harry, Ron, and Hermione in an attempt to pump them for information.

Chapter 8 - The Wedding
In which Harry, disguised by Polyjuice Potion, attends Bill's wedding to Fleur, where he meets Xenophilius Lovegood and Ron's Great Aunt Muriel and reencounters Viktor Krum and Elphias Doge. Thanks to Krum, Harry remembers who Gregorovitch is and learns that Xenophilius is wearing a symbol associated with Grindelwald, and thanks to Muriel's gossip he hears more about the Dumbledores. The party is broken up by the arrival of Shacklebolt's Patronus, warning the guests that the Ministry has fallen and Scrimgeour is dead, so the Death Eaters are coming.

Chapter 9 - A Place to Hide
In which HRH flee the Death Eaters by Apparating to Tottenham Court Road, Hermione's handbag turns out to have hidden depths, and HRH go to a Muggle café to plan their next move. Dolohov and Rowle arrive, they duel, and after cleaning up Harry recommends hiding out in Grimmauld Place.

Chapter 10 - Kreacher's Tale
In which Harry explores more of Grimmauld Place, finding a letter from his mother in Sirius' room, then discovering that Sirius' brother Regulus was the mysterious R.A.B. Hermione remembers seeing the locket two summers before, Harry calls Kreacher, and Kreacher reveals that while he took the locket, it was then taken from him by Mundungus Fletcher, and explains how it came into Regulus' possession. Harry then asks Kreacher to find Mundungus and bring him to Grimmauld Place, and wins Kreacher's loyalty by giving him the false locket for his own.

Chapter 11 - The Bribe
In which Lupin seeks out HRH at Grimmauld Place and offers to accompany them on their quest, but Harry refuses, recognizing that Lupin is seeking escape from complications in his personal life. Kreacher returns with Mundungus, who reveals that Umbridge took the locket from him as a bribe for not turning him in for selling magical artefacts without a license.

Chapter 12 - Magic Is Might
In which HRH, after weeks of planning, ambush three Ministry workers, assume their identities, and sneak into Ministry headquarters. To their horror, they learn that Ron has taken the identity of a man whose wife is about to be interrogated about her blood status, and who faces a sentence in Azkaban for being a Muggle-born with a wand.

Chapter 13 - The Muggle-born Registration Commission
In which Hermione accompanies Umbridge to court while Harry breaks into Umbridge's office, to find Mad-Eye's eye mounted on her door, while inside she has a file on Arthur Weasley and a copy of Rita Skeeter's book. Harry retrieves the eye and heads back downstairs to the courtroom, where he and Hermione Stun the Ministry workers, take the locket, and release the prisoners, telling them to go into hiding. They collect Ron and attempt to return to Grimmauld Place, but must abandon it when they realize they've accidentally brought a Death Eater with them into its protections.

Chapter 14 - The Thief
In which HRH have Apparated to the old Quidditch World Cup campgrounds, Ron having been splinched in the process. Hermione treats Ron's injuries and they set up camp, whereupon Harry has a vision of Voldemort interrogating Gregorovitch and realizes that Voldemort is searching for something Gregorovitch once had but which was stolen by a young man long ago.

Chapter 15 - The Goblin's Revenge
In which HRH spend weeks moving from place to place, failing either to destroy the locket Horcrux or to think of a lead to find the others and squabbling with one another in frustration, aggravated by the Horcrux's poisonous influence. Eventually they stumble across other fugitives - a party of Muggle-born wizards and goblins on the run - and learn that a fake has been substituted for Gryffindor's sword. They then question the portrait of Phineas Nigellus (which Hermione hid in her bag) and learn that the sword should be able to destroy Horcruxes. Ron, his self-control sapped by the Horcrux, then loses his temper and leaves.

Chapter 16 - Godric's Hollow
In which weeks pass while Harry and Hermione, the heart gone out of them with Ron, concentrate on finding a lead to the sword's location. At Christmastime, Harry asks to go to Godric's Hollow for personal reasons and Hermione agrees for quest-related reasons. After planning carefully, they Apparate into Godric's Hollow in disguise and visit the graves of Harry's parents.

Chapter 17 - Bathilda's Secret
Leaving the cemetery, Harry and Hermione see the Potters' old house, then encounter someone who appears to be Bathilda Bagshot but does not speak until she gets Harry alone. Too late, Harry discovers that they've been led into a trap, and that Bathilda's corpse is being used as a disguise for Nagini. He and Hermione manage to escape, at the cost of Harry's wand being broken accidentally by Hermione.

Chapter 18 - The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore
In which Hermione gives Harry a copy of The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore that she picked up in the Bagshot house, and they learn that the young man in the picture was Gellert Grindelwald, who according to Rita Skeeter was very close to Albus Dumbledore for a brief period when they were young, at a crucial period in both their lives.

Chapter 19 - The Silver Doe
In which Hermione Apparates with Harry to the Forest of Dean, where Harry, keeping watch late at night, sees and follows a Patronus in the form of a silver doe to a frozen pool in which the sword of Gryffindor lies. He is nearly strangled by the locket Horcrux's chain when he dives to retrieve it, and is saved from drowning by Ron, who has been shown the way back by the Deluminator. Ron then confronts and destroys the Horcrux after Harry commands it to open in Parseltongue. They return together to camp, where Harry has to protect Ron from Hermione for a while.

Chapter 20 - Xenophilius Lovegood
In which Harry and Ron bring each other up to date on their adventures, Hermione finds the triangular mark in a photograph of one of Dumbledore's letters, and the trio seek out Xenophilius Lovegood at his home for further information about the mark.

Chapter 21 - The Tale of the Three Brothers
In which Xenophilius Lovegood explains that the symbol is the symbol of the Deathly Hallows, and that the origin of the story is "The Tale of the Three Brothers", which Hermione then reads aloud. Xenophilius then explains the symbolism of the symbol and discusses the Hallows. Harry, wandering around the house, notices that there is no sign of Luna having been present for weeks, then confronts Xenophilius. Xenophilius then reveals that the Death Eaters took her, and he plans to hold HRH until they arrive so that he can trade them for her. HRH manage to escape while making it clear that Xenophilius wasn't making up what he told the Death Eaters.

Chapter 22 - The Deathly Hallows
In which Harry becomes obsessed with the Hallows, particularly the Stone (which he realizes is hidden inside the Snitch that Dumbledore left him). Ron takes over the hunt for Horcruxes. Then Ron finally manages to pick up a Potterwatch broadcast, from which HRH learn that Voldemort is out of the country - and Harry deduces that Voldemort is looking for the Elder Wand. Harry then accidentally says Voldemort's name aloud, which breaks their protective enchantments, betraying their whereabouts to a gang of Snatchers.

Chapter 23 - Malfoy Manor
In which Hermione disguises Harry's appearance with a jinx just before the Snatchers kidnap all three of them and take them to Malfoy Manor. Unfortunately, the Snatchers recognize Hermione and find the sword, so the subsequent questioning at Malfoy Manor soon takes a grim turn - Hermione is tortured by Bellatrix, who wants to know how they got the sword. Harry uses the broken two-way mirror to ask for help, and Dobby appears. Dobby helps Ron and Harry rescue all the captives at the Manor, which includes Disarming Bellatrix and Draco, but in the end Dobby is fatally wounded by Bellatrix.

Chapter 24 - The Wandmaker
In which Harry buries Dobby and regains perspective, putting the Horcrux hunt above the Hallows quest, though he realizes where the Elder Wand is and that Voldemort is about to get it as well as that there is probably a Horcrux hidden in the Lestranges' Gringotts vault. He first asks for Griphook's help in breaking into Gringotts, then asks Ollivander about the Elder Wand before telling the others that Voldemort is stealing the Elder Wand from Dumbledore's grave.

Chapter 25 - Shell Cottage
In which Griphook agrees to help break into Gringotts in exchange for the sword, which he considers to be rightfully goblin property, and Harry and Ron agree in bad faith, planning to retain it until the Horcrux hunt is over. Lupin arrives to announce the birth of his son and to ask Harry to be godfather, and Bill takes Harry aside in the confusion to warn Harry against breaking faith with goblins.

Chapter 26 - Gringotts
In which, plans and preparations being complete, Griphook accompanies HRH to Gringotts, hiding with Harry under the Cloak while Hermione poses as Bellatrix and Ron assumes a false identity. By using various spells to interfere with the minds of Gringotts staff members, they manage to reach the level of the Lestranges' vault before various defences are set off against them. They manage to obtain the cup from the vault, then escape by releasing the dragon guarding the most secure vaults and helping it break out.

Chapter 27 - The Final Hiding Place
In which HRH spend most of the day riding the dragon, only to get away from it near sunset. Harry has a vision of the theft being reported to Voldemort, and realizes that they are running out of time - Voldemort now knows that they are after Horcruxes, and they have to get to the Hogwarts Horcrux before he does.

Chapter 28 - The Missing Mirror
In which Harry, Ron, and Hermione return to Hogsmeade, are pursued by Death Eaters, and are rescued by Aberforth Dumbledore, who advises them to give up their quest, and explains why he doesn't blindly trust his late brother's judgement by telling them the true story of the life and death of Ariana Dumbledore.

Chapter 29 - The Lost Diadem
In which Neville escorts Harry, Ron, and Hermione through the passageway from the Hog's Head to the Room of Requirement, where Dumbledore's Army recaps the situation in Hogwarts and the Ravenclaws tell Harry about Ravenclaw's diadem. Luna escorts Harry to Ravenclaw Tower to look at its representation on Ravenclaw's statue, and Alecto Carrow ambushes them in the Ravenclaw common room.

Chapter 30 - The Sacking of Severus Snape
In which the Carrows are tied up, Voldemort learns of both the theft of the locket Horcrux and Harry's arrival in Ravenclaw Tower, Snape takes a short break, McGonagall rouses the castle, and many alumni arrive to help defend Hogwarts from the Death Eaters.

Chapter 31 - The Battle of Hogwarts
In which McGonagall orders the evacuation of those underage or who do not wish to fight, Voldemort delivers an ultimatum, and Harry learns how Voldemort acquired the diadem. Ron and Hermione return from destroying the cup, and together HRH go to the Room of Requirement to destroy the diadem. There they encounter Draco Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle, but his former henchmen no longer answer to Draco; during the subsequent duel, Crabbe unleashes Fiendfyre, which destroys much of the room's contents and kills him. HRH escape, rescuing Draco and Goyle in the process. They then encounter Percy and Fred, duelling Death Eaters, only to be caught by an explosion that kills Fred.

Chapter 32 - The Elder Wand
In which the battle continues but Voldemort remains with Nagini in the Shrieking Shack, awaiting Harry and brooding on the Elder Wand. He reaches a conclusion about the latter and sends for Snape while the trio make their way to him under the Invisibility Cloak, only to arrive in time to witness Snape's murder and receive some of his memories as a final message.

Chapter 33 - The Prince's Tale
In which Harry, using the Pensieve, learns of his mother's childhood friendship with Severus Snape, that Snape's worst memory was of how they became estranged, of how Snape became Dumbledore's agent, and that he himself was accidentally made a Horcrux on the night his parents were murdered.

Chapter 34 - The Forest Again
In which Harry, having learned that he himself was turned into a Horcrux when Voldemort killed his parents, goes to keep his appointment with Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest. Along the way, he makes sure that Neville knows about Nagini, then retrieves the Resurrection Stone from the Snitch and uses it. Upon reaching Aragog's web, where the Death Eaters are now camped, he permits Voldemort to use the Killing Curse on him without attempting to defend himself.

Chapter 35 - King's Cross
In which Harry awakens in what seems to him to be King's Cross station, where he encounters a fragment of Voldemort's soul, now powerless, and Albus Dumbledore, who explains what has just happened. Harry has to choose between going on or going back, and chooses to go back.

Chapter 36 - The Flaw in the Plan
In which both Harry and Voldemort regain consciousness in the Forest, Harry plays dead, and Hagrid is forced to carry Harry's body up to the castle, where Voldemort displays him to the defenders in an attempt to break their will to resist. Neville confronts Voldemort, who Body-Binds him and puts the Sorting Hat on him to make a point. Neville pulls Gryffindor's sword out of the Hat and kills Nagini when Voldemort is distracted by the arrival of the centaurs, the battle resumes, and Voldemort is finally defeated by Harry.

Epilogue - Nineteen Years Later
In which Harry, Ginny, Hermione, Ron, and Draco are all putting their older children on the Hogwarts Express.
